June Blog: Handling Challenging Types Of Online Students
Handling Challenging Types Of Online Students
This month's blog is Handling Challenging Types Of Online Students.
Handling challenging students is always difficult, especially when you are a teacher with a big class and everyone requires your attention. This task becomes even harder in the current situation when everyone is bound to learn online.
There are certain ways you can handle challenging students effectively and make sure that everyone receives the attention they require. This blog post covers four ways to handle the most challenging types of online students.

App of the Month
Every month we are going to feature a different, and hopefully FREE, iPad/iPod/iPhone/Android educational application. Visit our ever-changing app page.
The App of the Month for June is PhET Simulations by University of Colorado Boulder ( iOS and Android ).
Over 80 interactive simulations and games for math and science learning!
Engage in learning science and math with the award-winning PhET simulations! Whether understanding atoms, exploring energy, or mastering multiplication, there is a sim for every learner. Perfect for at home, in class, or on the road, this app delivers all PhET HTML5 sims (over 75 sims) in one easy-to-use package.
Developed by experts at the University of Colorado Boulder, PhET sims are used by millions of students every year. The PhET iPad app delivers these exclusive features:
- Offline play: learn on the bus or at the park without a WiFi connection.
- Multiple languages: app translate in many languages (great for bilingual learners).
- Favorites: pick your favorite sims and create your own custom collection.
- Automatic updates: get the latest HTML5 sims as soon as they are released.
- Easy sorting: find the right sims for you.
- Fullscreen: maximize your screen real estate for optimal sim exploration.
PARENTS: Engage your child in science and math discovery.
TEACHERS: Your favorite HTML5 sims at your fingertips, even without internet access.
ADMINISTRATORS: Optimized for school use, so your teachers will be seamlessly up to date.
STUDENTS: Tell your parents there’s an exciting app for learning science and math.
Note: The app does not include PhET’s Java or Flash sims. In addition, although we are currently working on improving the accessibility of our sims, most of the sims included in this app do not include keyboard navigation or screen reader access. As accessible sims become available, they will be updated within the app.
This app has a cost of $0.99. Proceeds from the app support the development of more HTML5 sims. On behalf of the PhET team and the students whose lives you have helped improve — Thank you!
PhET Simulations is available for Apple and Android devices.
Compatibility: Requires iOS 12.0 or later on Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and Android version 5.0 and up on your Android device.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS
- Increase Student Interactivity When Using PhET Simulations:
PhET simulations are free, online interactive simulations for teaching and learning science. The simulations emphasize visual models, cause-and-effect relationships, and multiple representations.
While the simulations are effective when used as a lecture demonstration, the impact of these demonstrations is greatly increased when students are given the opportunity to interact with the simulations. While students can interact with the simulations on their own computers in a class or lab environment, there are also several ways to encourage inquiry when the teacher is the one controlling the simulation.

- PhET Balancing Equations Simulation:
Kristin Moon Science brings us a great YouTube video showing how the PhET Balancing Chemical Equations simulation is a great tool at your disposal for helping your students understand how (and why) to balance chemical equations.
Learn more by visiting: HERE.
- PhET Science Simulations:
Simulations allow students to have a concrete idea of concepts that PhET simulations are free simulations on the topics of math, physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science that are useful for students of all grade levels. They are created by the University of Colorado in Boulder.
