- In 1693, Dom Perignon invented champagne.
- In 1777, retired British cavalry officer, Phillip Astley, established the first modern circus.
- In 1862, the United States government collected income tax for the first time.
- In 1922, female first baseman, Lizzie Murphy, played on the AL all-star team.
- In 1936, Jesse Owens wins his second of four gold metals in the long jump at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
- In 1944, Anne Frank and her family were arrested in Amsterdam, Holland, by the Nazis. Her diary was later published.
- In 1956, Elvis Presley releases "Hound Dog".
- In 1964, the bodies of missing civil rights workers: Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman & James E. Chaney, bodies were discovered in an earthen Mississippi dam.
- In 1969, secret negotiations begin in Paris, between the United States and North Vietnam, but fail to acheive a mutual troop withdrawal from South Vietnam.
- In 1974, President Jimmy Carter signed a bill establishing the Department of Energy.
