- In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain with the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña, on a journey to find a western sea route to China, India, and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.
- In 1852, America's first intercollegiate athletic event was held as Yale and Harvard met for a crew race on Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor, N.H.
- In 1861, the last entry of the serialized novel Great Expectations is published by Charles Dickens in his literary circular, All The Year Round.
- In 1921, the first aerial cropdusting was performed in Troy, Ohio to kill caterpillars.
- In 1948, Alger Hiss, an advisor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was accused of being a Communist and a Russian spy.
