October Features from Internet 4 Classrooms

October 2010 Picks

October 2010 is filled with school-wide calendar events. One important focus-point is National Dyslexia Month. We have 4 sub category resources for Teachers, Parents, Classroom and Other on our Dyslexia page. Other topics to honor this month include Fire Prevention Week, Character Education, Freedom from Bullying, and Halloween.

WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH?


There is a lot going on in October. Featured are a handful of events you can integrate into your classroom lesson plans:


  1. National Dyslexia Month - Learn how to identify Dyslexia. Go to the Teacher Resources page to discover methods of teaching students with Dyslexia. There is a Classroom Resources link that offers a wide range of tips: including worksheets, online games and phonics help. Parents can find tools for identifying and supporting children with Dyslexia on the Parent Resources page. Browse our Other Resources for audio textbooks, phonic activities and testing tools.
  2. National Popcorn Poppin' Month - In addition to tasty recipes, find history lessons, science projects, and teaching lesson plans all implementing this amazing seed. There are also teaching tools on math, science, and social studies using popcorn kernels.
  3. Fire Prevention Week OCT 3- 9 - This year is "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With!" Find lesson plans for K-6 on how to teach fire safety in your classroom and print outs of family escape plans and safety sheets.
  4. National Character Counts Week OCT 17- 23 - National Character Counts Week reminds us of the responsibility we have in raising children with values and morals. Find teacher resources for implementing the Six Pillars of Character. Go here for resources on teaching good character values, anger management, conflict resolution, problem solving, and so much more.
  5. National Chemistry Week OCT 17- 23 - Find resources, instructions, and tools on periodic tables, chemistry tutorials, molecules, and simulations. There is also is a link for high school chemistry students, offering practice skills needed for end of course chemistry exams.
  6. Freedom from Bullies Week OCT 18-24 - We have resources and lesson plans on cyber bullying, building a classroom bully-free-zone, how to help children who are being bullied, defining tattling vs. bullying, and how to report bullying.
  7. Halloween OCT 31 - Trick or treat!! Who doesn't love a good ghost story, song, party idea, or learning the history of Halloween.


TEACHER RESOURCES


  1. Blogging. Learn how to create a blog account using blogger.com. See a sample classroom blog. Find out how to write a blog entry.
  2. Teacher tools page. You can access everything teachers need for the school year, including planning help and worksheets.
  3. Reading skills can improve with these online reading activities and practice reading tests.
  4. K - 12 resources by subject and topic as well as instructional information. There is also a school specialists section covering guidance counselors, media specialist, technology coordinators and administrators.
  5. Kindergarten Skills to find subject help, readiness, arts, music and dance, and so much more.
  6. Online phonics practice modules focusing on topics like beginning sounds, sight words, and worksheets.
  7. Pre-K - 8th Skillbuilders and 7th - 12th grade resources.
  8. Sample assessment tests on all subjects.


PARENT RESOURCES


  1. Educational games and web games are great exercises for the brain.
  2. Practice typing skills with some of these online typing lessons.
  3. Find reading help with these online reading exercises and practice reading tests.
  4. Links about anger management, conflict resolution, bullying, and moral decision making skills.


TECHNOLOGY TIPS


  1. The world of Blogging: Find out how to create a blog for your classroom and post homework assignments online.
  2. Learn how to use the built-in Thesaurus in Microsoft Word.
