- In 1556, St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuit order of Catholic priests and brothers, died in Rome.
- In 1777, the Marquis de Lafayette, a 19 year old French nobleman, joined the American Continental Army and was made a major-general without pay.
- In 1792, the cornerstone was laid for the first government building, the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- In 1922, 18 year old Ralph Samuelson rides on the world's first pair of water skis in Minnesota.
- In 1961, Israel welcomed its 1,000,000th immigrant.
- In 1965, cigarette advertisements were banned on British TV.
- In 1981, Arnette Hubbard is installed as the first woman president of the National Bar Association.
- In 1990, Nolan Ryan won the 300th game of his career, becoming the 20th pitcher to do so.
- In 1991, S.T.A.R.T. (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) was signed in Moscow by U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.
- In 2008, scientists reported that the Phoenix spacecraft had confirmed the presence of frozen water in soil from the planet Mars.
