  4. In 1936, the Spanish Civil War began as Generalissimo Francisco Franco led an uprising of army troops based in Spanish North Africa.
  5. In 1940, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is nominated for a third term at the Democratic Convention.
  6. In 1955, the first electric power generated from atomic energy was sold commercially.
  7. In 1966, Carl Sagan (American astronomer and author) turned 1 billion seconds old.
  8. In 1986, video of the wreckage of the Titanic (which sank in 1912) was released.
  9. In 1994, the NY Jets sign USA Soccer goalkeeper Tony Meola as a place kicker.
  10. In 1999, David Cone of the New York Yankees pitched the 14th perfect game in modern major league baseball history in a game against the Montreal Expos.
