  1. In 622, the Moslem Era begins as Mohammed beginis his Flight from Mecca to Medina.
  2. In 1439, kissing is banned in England to stop the spread of germs.
  3. In 1790, Congress establishes the District of Columbia (D.C.) from land in Maryland and Virginia.
  4. In 1861, The Battle of Bull Run is fought. This was the first major battle of the Civil War.
  5. In 1909, the longest scoreless game in American League baseball history was played by Detroit and Washington for 18 innings.
  6. In 1918, Czar Nicholas II, his wife and children are executed in Russia. This is the end of the Romanov monarchy which had ruled Russia since the 1600's.
  7. In 1941, the temperature in Seattle, Washington hit its record high at 100 F.
  8. In 1945, the first atomic bomb is successfully tested in New Mexico.
  9. In 1951, J.D. Salinger publishes "The Catcher and the Rye"
  10. In 1999, John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife and sister in law are killed in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, MA.
