- In 44 BC, Pharaoh Cleopatra VII of Egypt declares her son Ptolemy XV Caesarion as co-ruler of Egypt.
- In 1789, Congress establised the United States Treasury Department.
- In 1870, Napoleon III personally surrenders at Sedan to the Prussians.
- In 1930, the first non-stop airplane flies from Europe to US in 37 hours.
- In 1936, the first transatlantic round-trip air flight took place.
- In 1945, V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day), a formal surrender ceremony, was performed in Tokyo Bay, Japan aboard the battleship USS Missouri.
