History: What Happened Today?
- In 1778, the Battle of Monmouth, NJ (Gen Washington beats Clinton).
- In 1820, the tomato was proven non-poisonous. This proved that moms do know best and you should eat your vegetables!
- In 1838, Britain's Queen Victoria was crowned in Westminster Abbey.
- In 1894, Labor Day was established as a national holiday for federal employees, observed the first Monday of September.
- In 1914, Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sofia, were assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serb nationalist. This event triggered World War I. Ironically, on the same day in 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France, ending World War I.
- 1917, the Raggedy Ann doll was invented.
- In 1965, the 1st US ground combat forces in Vietnam authorized by President Johnson.
- In 1982, Prince Charles & Lady Diana name their baby "William".
- In 1992, 2 earthquakes, including 3rd strongest in US (7.4) rock California.
- In 1997, Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during their WBA heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas. Yuck!
- In 2007, the American bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list.
- In 2008, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Los Angeles Angels without getting a hit, only the fifth time that's been done in modern major league baseball history.
