June 17: What Happened on This Day in History (High_school Level)?

  1. In 1631, the Taj Mahal construction began, and went on for the next 20 yrs.
  2. In 1775, the Battle of Bunker Hill began.
  3. In 1856, the first Republican Convention was held in Pittsburgh, P.A. to establish the Republican party on a national level.
  4. In 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in the U.S.
  5. In 1928, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, even though she was a passenger on this flight.
  6. In 1947, President Truman declared that universal military training was necessary for all troops.
  7. In 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court decided the Lord's Prayer and reading Bible versus could not be required in schools.
  8. In 1967, China successfully launched the country's first hydrogen bomb.
  9. In 1972, the Watergate burglars were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters. This large scandal prompted the resignation of President Nixon.
  10. In 1994, O.J. Simpson lead police on a high speed chase and was arrested for killing his ex-wife.
