June 15: What Happened on This Day in History (High_school Level)?

  1. In 1667, the first human blood transfusion was administered by Dr. Jean Baptiste. He successfully transfused the blood of a sheep to a 15-year old boy.
  2. In 1775, George Washington was appointed to lead America's first military branch.
  3. In 1836, Arkansas became the 25th state. There was argument over calling it Arkansas or Arkan-saw. It was settled on Arkan-saw with a legislative act in 1881.
  4. In 1864, the Arlington National Cemetery was established.
  5. In 1916, the Boy Scouts of America was founded, incorporated by President Woodrow Wilson.
  6. In 1923, Lou Gehrig played his first major league baseball game with the New York Yankees.
  7. In 1949, President James Polk died. A president most known for leading America into the Mexican-American War.
  8. In 1992, Vice President Dan Quayle told a student who missed the word "potato" in a spelling bee, that the correct spelling was p-o-t-a-t-o-e.
  9. In 1995, the famous phrase "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit," took way during the O.J. Simpson trial.
  10. In 1996, the famous jazz musician, Ella Fitzgerald, passed away.
  11. Famous Birthdays: Neil Patrick Harris, actor; Ice Cube, rap artist; Courtney Cox, actress; Helen Hunt, actress; Jim Belushi, actor; Bob Wien, founded Big Boy Restaurants.
