  1. In 1776, the American Colonies declared Independence from Britain.
  2. In 1826, on the 50th Anniversary of Independence Day, both John Adams (2nd President) and Thomas Jefferson (3rd President, died in their respective homes.
  3. In 1831, on the 55th Anniversary of Independence Day, James Monroe (5th President) died in New York City.
  4. In 1872, on the 96th Anniversary of Independence Day, Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States, was born in Plymouth, Vt.
  5. In 1884, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States by France, in Paris.
  6. Famous Birthdays: United States of America, Calvin Coolidge, Stephen Foster (songwriter), Nathanial Hawthorne (writer), Neil Simon (playwriter), Gloria Stuart (actress), Pauline "Dear Abby" Phillips (columnist)
