  1. In 1586, Sir Thomas Harriot introduces potatoes to Europe.
  2. In 1821, Peru declared its independence from Spain.
  3. In 1858, the first use of fingerprints as a means of identification is made.
  4. In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing due process and the equal protection of the laws to former slaves, was declared in effect.

  9. In 1977, the first oil through the TransAlaska Pipeline System reached Valdez, Alaska.
  10. In 2005, the Irish Republican Army renounced the use of violence against British rule in Northern Ireland and said it would disarm.
