  1. In 1775, the U.S. Postal Service was established by the Second Continental Congress and Benjamin Franklin was appointed the first Postmaster General of the United States.
  2. In 1788, Sydney Australia was settled by British colonists.
  3. In 1835, the first sugar cane plantation started in Hawaii.
  4. In 1847, Moses Garrish Farmer builds first miniature train for children to ride.
  5. In 1931, a swarm of grasshoppers decended on crops throughout the American heartland, devastating millions of acres in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
  6. In 1947, President Truman signed the National Security Act, creating the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
  7. In 1948, President Truman signed executive orders prohibiting discrimination in the U.S. armed forces and federal employment.
  8. In 1952, Mickey Mantle hits his first "Grand Slam".
  9. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  10. In 2000, a federal judge approved a $1.25 billion settlement between Swiss banks and more than a half million plaintiffs who alleged the banks had hoarded money deposited by Holocaust victims.
