- 1829 William Austin Burt of Mount Vernon, Mich., received a patent for his typographer, a forerunner of the typewriter.
- 23 Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri fills a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream, and the ice cream cone is invented.(1904)
- In 1903, Ford Motor Company sells its first Model A car.
- In 1940, "Blitz" all-night air raid by German bombers on London begins.
- 1952 Egyptian military officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk I (National Day)
- In 1958, first 4 women are named to peerage in the House of Lords in Great Britain.
- In 1973, President Nixon refuses to release Watergate tapes of conversations in the White House relevant to the Watergate investigation.
- In 1974, Greek military dictatorship collapses.
- 23 Air Force Colonel Eileen M. Collins becomes the first woman to command a space shuttle. (1999)
