  1. 1749 - Benning Wentworth issues the first of the New Hampshire Grants, leading to the establishment of Vermont.
  2. 1870 - Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge begins.
  3. 1933 - Minnie D. Craig becomes the first female elected as Speaker of the North Dakota House of Representatives, the first female to hold a Speaker position anywhere in the United States.
  4. 1959 - Alaska is admitted as the 49th U.S. state.
  5. 2000 - The last original weekday Peanuts comic strip is published.
  6. Famous Birthdays: Cicero (Roman politician and philosopher), J. R. R. Tolkien (English philologist and author), Antoine Thomson d'Abbadie (French geographer), Charles Piazzi Smyth (Italian astronomer), Donald J. Russell (American businessman)
