  1. In 1056, Byzantine Empress Theodora becomes ill and dies suddenly without children to succeed the throne, thereby ending the Macedonian dynasty.
  2. In 1886, scientists record the first major earthquake in the eastern US.
  3. In 1909, the A J Reach Co patents cork-centered baseball, which was used as the official ball of the World's series of 1910, 1911, and 1912.
  4. In 1955, the first sun-powered automobile was demonstrated in Chicago, Ill.
  5. In 1960, the Agricultural Hall of Fame is created to serve as the national museum of agriculture and a memorial to industry leaders.
  6. In 1971, Astronaut Dave Scott becomes the first person to drive a car on the Moon.
  7. In 1972, Olga Korbut, from the USSR, wins the Olympic gold medal in the field of Gymnastics.
  8. In 1988, a five day power outage of downtown Seattle begins.
  9. In 1987, the video, "Bad" by Michael Jacskon, premieres on CBS TV.
  10. In 1994, a Pentium computer beats the world chess champ, Gari Kasparov.
