- In 708 A.D., for the first time, copper coins are minted in Japan (Traditional Japanese date: August 10, 708).
- In 1862, the United States Bureau of Engraving & Printing begins operation.
- In 1885, the German patent for a motorcycle is received by Gottlieb Daimler.
- In 1893, Whitcomb Judson receives a patent for the zipper.
- In 1898, the Goodyear Tire company is established.
- In 1914, the commercial cargo ship, SS Arizonan, is the first vessel to arrive in San Francisco via Panama Canal.
- In 1916, Congress institutes the United States Naval reserve.
- In 1965, American astronauts L. Gordon Cooper and Charles M. "Pete" Conrad complete 120 Earth orbits in Gemini 5, the 19th spaceflight of all time.
- In 1988, Russia launches 3 cosmonauts to station Mir.
- 2005 - Hurricane Katrina devastates much of the U.S. Gulf Coast, causing over $115 billion in damage.
