  1. In 1521, Hernando Cortes conquered the Aztecs and became the ruler of a Mexican empire.
  2. In 1878, the first victim of the Memphis Yellow Fever epidemic dies.
  3. In 1889, William Grey patents the coin-operated telephone.
  4. In 1914, Carl Wickman founds Greyhound, the first U.S. bus line, in Minnesota.
  5. In 1942, Walt Disney's animated film "Bambi" premiered at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
  6. In 1948, at the age of 42, Satchel Paige pitches his first major league complete game.
  7. In 1961, the Communist leader of East Germany cut off access between East and West Berlin to prevent its citizens from seeking to live in West Germany, which was democratic, by laying more than 100 miles of barbed wire, which was replaced by the Berlin Wall.
  8. In 1993, the U.S. Court of Appeals rules that all members of Congress must save all emails.
  9. In 1995, Yankee legend Mickey Mantle died of liver cancer.
  10. In 2008, American swimmer Michael Phelps became the winningest Olympic athlete ever when he won his 10th and 11th career gold medals.
