One year ago, we shared eight online resources to help teachers prepare for the Semiquincentennial — America's 250th birthday. Well, parents, the countdown is over. On July 4, 2026, the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the whole country is throwing a party a quarter-millennium in the making. This summer is a once-in-a-lifetime teachable moment, and you don't need a classroom or a curriculum to make it stick. With a little curiosity and a handful of free tools, you can turn fireworks and cookouts into real learning your kids will carry with them. Below, we've gathered free websites, apps (available on both iOS and Android), YouTube channels, and hands-on ideas to help your family enjoy and understand this historic milestone.

WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH?

Here are some of the July events that you can celebrate or make note of this month:

1. National Ice Cream Month
   
   Stay cool this month with some ice cream! Learn about the history of ice cream and how ice cream is made.




2. National Picnic Month
   
   July is National Picnic Month. Go out and have a picnic with your family! Find creative recipes for breakfast or lunch picnics, picnic-themed songs, books, and games for preschoolers, and fun picnic-themed activities. Find tips for planning a picnic here.






3. Canada Day (7/1)
   
   Happy Canada Day! Today is the anniversary of Canada's creation in 1867. Learn about Canada's history, geography, and people. Celebrate Canada Day with fun crafts, games, printables, and recipes.




4. Battle of Gettysburg (7/1)
   
   Today, learn about the battle that was the turning point of the American Civil War. Learn more about Gettysburg and find Civil War activities, printables, and interactive maps here.


5. Independence Day (7/4)
   
   Did you know that the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress on this day in 1776? Read the Declaration of Independence this Fourth of July and learn about the American Revolution. Find useful resources about the American Revolution here. 6. E.B. White's Birthday (7/11/1899)
   
   Happy Birthday to children's author E.B. White! Learn about his life and his works. Find tons of teacher resources, activities, and printables for one of his most popular books, Charlotte's Web. 7. Moon Landing (7/20)
   
   "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Apollo 11 landed on the moon on this day in 1969. Watch a video of the moon landing and learn about this historical space mission through biographies, fun activities, and books. Don't forget to download the App of the Month for July 2015 for all things NASA related, as well as the App of the Month for July 2016 for Space Images from JPL.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS



1. Primary Source Activity: The Declaration of Independence's Influence Around the World:
   This National Constitution Center activity is part of its America at 250 Civic Toolkit and pairs with historian David Armitage's essay on how the Declaration shaped movements worldwide. Students read and annotate Thomas Jefferson's last letter (his reply declining an invitation to the 1826 Jubilee of Independence) and then complete a graphic organizer analyzing the Declaration as "the birth certificate" of the nation. Downloadable Google Docs, Word, and PDF versions let teachers assign it digitally or share directly to Google Classroom, making it a ready-to-use civic resource for the 250th anniversary.

2. The Declaration of Independence: From Rough Draft to Proclamation:
   This Library of Congress classroom lesson introduces students to primary-source analysis by having them examine and compare Thomas Jefferson's digitized "original Rough draught" against the first printed version of the Declaration adopted on July 4, 1776. Students work from downloadable high-resolution PDFs of the actual manuscripts plus a "Making Comparisons" handout, identifying the wording changes made during drafting and debating how those edits shaped the document's meaning. It's a strong technology-enabled activity that puts genuine founding-era digital archives in students' hands.

3. Gettysburg 360° Virtual Tour:
   The American Battlefield Trust's interactive 360° virtual tour lets students explore the Gettysburg battlefield from any device, following the fighting across iconic sites like Culp's Hill, the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den, Little Round Top, and Cemetery Ridge. Clickable tour points and panoramic scenes deliver photographs and historical context, and the tour can be viewed full-screen or in VR with a headset. Paired with the site's animated battle map and short videos, it's an immersive, no-cost way to bring the battle's three days into the classroom.

Free Online Practice Resources for ACT Tests and SAT Tests. I4C now offers free SAT and ACT vocabulary and math quizzes. Join our SAT and ACT Test Preparation program and log in as much as you'd like. Students can take practice tests on 5000 vocabulary words or over 1000 math problems. Parents and Mentors can log in to monitor your scores - including seeing which vocabulary words that were missed. Interactive quizzes allow the test taker to retake and study as much as they want.
