Using Anchors

Purpose of an Anchor

An anchor is a target to a specific location on a web page. The anchor allows an link to be created to that location. For example this link allows you to jump directly to the bottom of the page. This phrase is not an anchor, it is a link to the anchor which was placed at the bottom of the page. You do not see an anchor on the web page, you can only see it on the Claris HomePage document.

Making a link to an Anchor

Placing the Anchor

  • Decide on the location of the of the anchor. Examples of some obvious locations:
    • top of the page
    • bottom of the page
    • a specific topic on the page
  • Select the anchor button from the toolbar at the top of the page
  • Name the anchor
    • Keep the name simple, it is going to be part of a URL
    • After naming the anchor copy the name. If one character is incorrect the link will not work

Making a link to the Anchor

  • Highlight the words that you want to make a link to the anchor
  • Select the Link Editor button
  • For the URL enter number sign and the exact name of the anchor as you see below:
  • The steps you see above were those followed to create the anchor and link at the top of this page in the Purpose of an Anchor section.

Creating a link to an anchor on another page

To illustrate the usefulness of making a link to an anchor on another page you are going to be asked to visit a page two different ways.

  • Go to a page of Earth and Space science links and scroll down until you find a list of Weather links. After you find them use the Back button from the Netscape toolbar to return to this page. The URL used for this link was http://www.memphis-schools.k12.tn.us/admin/tlapages/earthspace.htm
  • You are going back to the same page. However, the second link URL includes a link to the anchor located at the beginning of the Weather links. That anchor was named weather, thus the entire URL is http://www.memphis-schools.k12.tn.us/admin/tlapages/earthspace.htm#weather

A page written by someone else

If you found a page on the Internet with an anchor that you think will be useful, this is handled just as you would produce any link. When you copy the link make sure that it has the anchor link at the end. For example:

A page you wrote

If you have written two pages with Claris HomePage and want to provide a link on one page to an anchor on the second page the process is best done from the Insert menu

  • Highlight the word or phrase that will become the link.
  • From the Insert menu select Link to File...
  • Click the Open button
  • Open the link editor from the toolbar
  • Click behind the URL and enter the number sign (#) and name of the anchor.

A page you wrote

A more direct method of linking to a page you wrote uses only the last two steps from the list above.

  • Highlight the word or phrase that will become the link.
  • Open the link editor from the toolbar
  • Enter only the name of the page including the anchor link, as in the window below:

Be considerate of those visiting your web page. Help them navigate easily by providing links to anchors on your page.
