Sneaky Ways to Keep Your Kids Learning This Summer

The summer is not a reason to forget about learning. It is rather an opportunity to help your kid develop skills and knowledge. Without a school schedule and a bunch of homework, you have the freedom to experiment with creative assignments and teaching methods.

The main thing about organizing learning activities on holidays is to make them fun. Your child does not have to associate them with school lessons.

How to develop learning skills in summer. Tips for Parents:

Find time on reading:
Reading is an essential skill for students. This activity helps develop new information, as well as imagination. Of course, children do not have to read academic literature all the time. Even school textbooks might seem boring to them. Here are some better alternatives:

  • instructions to LEGO,
  • descriptions of computer games,
  • kids detective or adventure stories,
  • jokes.

Work on writing skills:
Writing skills include grammar rules. A lot of young people have issues with English grammar, even if it is their native language. At each grade level, the elementary teacher lays the foundation for writing skills. Children learn the basic rules of spelling and punctuation. Help your kid with this task.

    • Ask him/her to write a letter to a wizard. Your child can describe wishes and dreams in it.
    • Offer your young learner to keep a diary. He/she can describe feelings and plan the future.
    • Organize a funny "spy surveillance." A neighbor's cat or dog can be your object. Let your child write everything he/she has noticed about it.
    • Your kid might like to become a teacher for a while. Ask him/her to edit something. For instance, write a short text with mistakes and ask to find errors in this paper.
    • Give your child a mission to write a super-secret document and encrypt it.

Go outdoors:
Kids like outdoor activities, as the open space gives the feeling of freedom.

  • You can organize a quest for them: Say, hide a "treasure" in the backyard and draw a map with explanations on how to find it. Thus, children can develop a sense of direction and practice reading skills.
  • Give your kids an important mission while walking in the downtown or park. For instance, ask them to find the figure "8." It can be hidden in the number of the bus, house number, street name, on the T-shirt of a passer-by, etc.

Go in for sports: Summer is a perfect time for fun activities, and sports activities can be an important part of learning cooperation and social skills. Have students make up math word problems about their teams: Joey had two hits, I had three hits. How many hits did our team have?

Your goal as a parent is to motivate the kid to learn and broaden the mind all the time, whether it is school time or holidays. A playful approach for this purpose works best. Your child should take an assignment as a part of an exciting game. In this case, learning is a pleasure, and your little pupil does not even realize that you teach him/her.
