Become The Teacher You Always Wanted To Be With These 8 Tips

Every teacher dreams of being the educator that their pupils look up to. How can you do your job and inspire students to be their absolute best? With a little work and effort, you can do it. Here are 8 tips that you can put to use right now.

1. Stick To Your Commitments

As a teacher, you may feel as though you're being pulled in a thousand different directions at once. How can you commit to anything when so many people need you? It's hard, but you've got to do it. Students will remember when you keep to your word, so stick to the commitments you make as best as you can. This makes you reliable, something a lot of students need from their educators.

2. Give Students Your Full Attention

Whenever you're speaking to students, get to their level and pay full attention to them. This is especially important when dealing with younger students. Show them that they matter to you. Whatever you see going on in the corner of your eye, ignore it until the conversation is finished.

3. Be Honest

Why lie to your students? It may seem like a quick fix when you need to smooth over a situation, but it only creates problems further down the road. Be honest with them, and you'll be modelling the behaviour you expect from them. It's easier for students to respect you when you're being open with them.

4. Create A Community

In your classroom, help your students come together as a group to solve their problems. Encourage team work, and help them work together on projects. This works online too. The Huffington Post posts about online writing communities, where students can help each other with their writing and grow as writers.

5. Welcome Your Students

When your students are coming in for the day, welcome them as they arrive. You can do this by standing at the door and greeting them warmly as they enter the room.. It really helps a student feel as though they belong, if they're treated to a warm smile at the beginning of the session.

6. Compliment Your Students

When your students have done well, compliment them on a job well done. "There's nothing better than being noticed, and complimented, by a teacher," says educator Gary Hillman at Best Australian Writers. "When your student does well, show them you've noticed. Even a quick 'Well done' could really make someone's day."

7. Make Learning Relevant

Many students question why they're even studying a subject, when it's not always clear how they'll use it in the real world. That's when you can see issues such as bad behaviour and truancy. You can avoid that, and really make a difference to students, if you make your lessons relevant to them. Get on their level. What is it about your lesson that will really speak to them? How can they use the knowledge you give them in their lives, going forward?

8. Give Them The Tools To Succeed

You can't always be there as a teacher, so give your students the tools they need when they're struggling. Try the following:

  1. Grammarix and Via Writing: To improve grammar.
  2. Cite It In: To cite all sources correctly.
  3. State Of Writing: Writing guides when they're struggling with essays.
  4. AcademAdvisor: Writing blog that's a useful read for students.

  5. Use these tips to really inspire your students, and show them how learning can be valuable. You can be that inspirational teacher with a little work.
