Grade 5-6: Vocabulary Lesson for Tuesday, Week 15

This week's theme is: Story Vocab


Word List 15

  1. protagonist: The main character in a story.
  2. narrator: A person who tells a story.
  3. antagonist: An opponent in a conflict.
  4. character: traits and qualities distinguishing an individual; a person represented in a book or play.
  5. commentary: Explanations of events or text.
  6. dialogue: A conversation between two or more people.
  7. genre: A category of literary work.

Tuesday Activities

  1. Braineo - Braineos makes studying fast and fun. Create decks of flashcards or use decks already created by our community, and memorize them using our selection of games.
  2. Write your vocabulary words in alphabetical order in your vocabulary notebook. Write your own definition beside each word.
  3. Create your own pocket personal organizer - From the list on the left, click and drag the cards you wish to have in your organizer. We suggest you pick one page from the calendar section and one from the organizer section. The others are your free choice. Fill in the pages with your vocabulary words and definitions along with any other information you wish to share, such as This Day in History. You can also choose a couple of games to add that you can play during the day. Follow the direction after printing to fold it up and keep it in your pocket for a quick study review..

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

This book features an honorable and tragic protagonist.
The story has a female protagonist who looked totally harmless but could do amazing things.

I was not sure if the narrator was retelling an event that had really happened or was making it up as he went along.
The a narrator seemed to be affected by insanity.

Some writers give the antagonist superhuman powers.
The old woman has become a more potent antagonist than he had imagined.


He declined to comment on his future job.
The actor did not respond to a request for comment.

It is important to continue a dialogue, despite differences.
Her mother wanted to engage in a serious and confidential dialogue with her daughter.

The classic films were neatly organized by genre.
