Grade 3-4: Vocabulary Lesson for Thursday, Week 5

This week's theme is: Solving Problems


Word List 5

  1. solution: the answer to a problem
  2. method: a way of doing things
  3. diagram: a drawing to explain things using a picture or chart
  4. observe: to watch very closely
  5. explore: to look at new things and learn about them.

Thursday Activities

  1. Create your own crossword puzzle. Click on the link and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Enter your words and your clues (definition), then click "Create Crossword Now." A new web page will appear. You can put a title on your puzzle if you wish, then click "Create Crossword." Print this out and complete the puzzle. Insert the completed work in your vocabulary notebook.
  2. Word Scrambler - Click on the link and create your own word scrambler with your vocabulary words. Type in the number of words you wish to scramble and press the "next" button. You will see a sheet that has the answers for you. Press next again and print out the page. Complete it and put it in your notebook.
  3. Create a word cloud with this tool. Type in each vocabulary word. Also type in some synonyms and antonyms of each word. When you are finished, click "Go." See if you can match up the vocabulary word with its synonyms and antonyms.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

My math teacher said the solution was easy.
The solution to the problem was easy after the teacher explained how to do it.

This is the method for adding a series of numbers.
There are many methods used to divide numbers.

I needed a diagram to help me understand the problem.
We came up with our own problem and also made a diagram to go with it.

I have a hard time doing things if I am being observed.
A baby learns by observing the world around her.

The boy had fun exploring the cave.
My teacher told me to explore many methods until I found one I liked.
