Grade 3-4: Vocabulary Lesson for Wednesday, Week 14

This week's theme is: The North Pole


Word List 14

  1. harsh: uncomfortable; hard.
  2. glide: Moving along a surface smoothly while remaining in contact with it.
  3. barren: Not having seeds, grass, trees, or things growing.
  4. continent: A large area of land.
  5. climate: Long term weather conditions.

Wednesday Activities

  1. Literacy Dominoes - Create a game using your vocabulary words. Click on the link to begin.
  2. Type your words in the box entering each word on a new line.
  3. When you have finished, click on "print sheet" at the lower right side. Cut out your dominoes and play with a friend. When you place the words, tell the other player a sentence using that word.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

The harsh weather made him stay inside.
Life in the harsh environment was not easy.

It is fun to watch the seals glide through the water.
The snowmobile can glide across the ice.

The terrain is barren.
When we look out the window, all we see is barren land and snow.

There are research stations in the continent of Antarctica
Antarctica is the driest and windiest continent.

The climate here is very cold.
This climate is full of blizzards and harsh cold.
