Grade 11-12: Vocabulary Lesson for Friday, Week 9

Word List 9

  1. fiduciary: of or relating to a holding of something in trust for another: a fiduciary heir; a fiduciary contract; of or being a trustee or trusteeship; held in trust
  2. gauche: lacking social polish; tactless
  3. hubris: overbearing pride or presumption; arrogance
  4. incontrovertible: impossible to dispute; unquestionable
  5. interpolate: to insert or introduce between other elements or parts; to insert (material) into a text; to insert into a conversation; to change or falsify (a text) by introducing new or incorrect material; (in mathematics) to estimate a value of a function or series between two known values
  6. infrastructure: an underlying base or foundation especially for an organization or system; the basic facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society, such as transportation and communications systems, water and power lines, and public institutions including schools, post offices, and prisons
  7. loquacious: very talkative; garrulous

Friday Activities

  1. On week one, we suggested you create an account on Study Stack. Click the link to go to Study Stack.
  2. Log into your account. You will see the stack you created last week. Click on the "edit" button to the right of that stack. Click on the "Data" tab. Write your words on the left and the definitions on the right. If you run out of blank areas, click on the Save Changes button.
  3. Use the scroll down bar on the right to see the blank line at the bottom of the list. After entering your words and definitions, click on the "Save Changes" button. The icons at the bottom of the page are the various games you can choose to play. Select a game for this week and see how well you do!

If you need more information on your words, click on the link to use a on-line dictionary.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

My accountant feels that it's his fiduciary duty to advise me about my investments.
A publisher has a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of an author.

The man is a talented musician but he is socially gauche.
Just as in My Fair Lady, the professor took a gauche young lady and transformed her.

"Be warned young man," my wise old uncle told me, "Your hubris will be your downfall.^
Technological hubris has caused many computer users to shy away from the software giant.

Turning to the jury the prosecutor intoned, "This next fact, ladies and gentlemen, is incontrovertible proof of Mr. Smith's guilt.^
One of the things I enjoy about Geometry is the way that incontrovertible proofs are guilt point by point.

To make sense of things you must interpolate several facts into the account.
"Look carefully at the temperature data, "my meteorology professor told us, "and interpolate the temperature for 3:15 PM.

One of the most common element in post-apocalyptic films is the crumbling infrastructure.
Infrastructure repair is of major importance following large earthquakes.

The loquacious guest did his very best to dominate every conversation at the neighborhood get-together.
