  1. In 1522, one of Magellan's ships, the Vittoria, returns to Spain after completing the first trip around the world.
  2. In 1716, the first US lighthouse, the Boston Lighthouse on Brewser Island in Boston Harbor, was built .
  3. In 1899, Carnation processes its first can of evaporated milk calling it Carnation Sterilized Cream, and later called Carnation Evaporated Milk.
  4. In 1901, President William McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo NY and dies eight days later.
  5. In 1920, in the first radio broadcast of a prizefight, Jack Dempsey knocks out Billy Miske in 3 rounds for the heavyweight boxing title.
  6. In 1923, the Kingdom of the Netherlands Queen Wilhelmina, enthroned on 6 September 1898, celebrates her 25 year jubilee.
  7. In 1957, Elvis records "White Christmas," "Silent Night" & "Here Comes Santa Claus" on his Christmas Album, the fourth album by Elvis Presley on RCA Victor Records.
  8. In 1976, Russian pilot Belenko successfully defected to the West, flying his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 "Foxbat" jet fighter to Hakodate, Japan. This was the first time that Western experts were able to get a close look at the aircraft.
  9. In 1980, Macalaster University of St. Paul, Minnesota beats Mount Senario 17-14, ending their losing streak of 50 games.
  10. In 1986, Michael Spinks knocks out Steffen Tangstad in 4 rounds retaining his World Heavyweight Championship boxing title.
  11.
