March 1: What Happened on This Day in History (High_school Level)?

  1. 752 BC - Romulus, legendary first king of Rome, celebrates the first Roman triumph after his victory over the Caeninenses, following The Rape of the Sabine Women.
  2. 1642 - Georgeana, Massachusetts (now known as York, Maine), becomes the first incorporated city in the United States.
  3. 1692 - Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba are brought before local magistrates in Salem Village, Massachusetts, beginning what would become known as the Salem witch trials.
  4. 1781 - The Continental Congress adopts the Articles of Confederation.
  5. 1803 - Ohio is admitted as the 17th U.S. state.
  6. 1867 - Nebraska becomes the 37th U.S. state; Lancaster, Nebraska is renamed Lincolnand becomes the state capital.
  7. 1872 - Yellowstone National Park is established as the world's first national park.
  8. 1873 - E. Remington and Sons in Ilion, New York begins production of the first practical typewriter.
  9. 1936 - The Hoover Dam is completed.
  10. 1961 - President of the United States John F. Kennedy establishes the Peace Corps.
  11. Famous Birthdays: John Pell (English mathematician), Frédéric Chopin (Polish pianist and composer), Archer John Porter Martin (English chemist, Nobel Prize laureate), Boris Chertok (Polish-Russian engineer), Yitzhak Rabin (Israeli politician, 5th Prime Minister of Israel, Nobel Prize laureate)
