  2. In 1942, the first detachment of Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, begin basic training.
  3. In 1960, the USSR recovered 2 dogs; the first living organisms to return from space.
  4. In 1969, in "one small step for man, one giant step for mankind", Apollo 11 Astronaut Neil Armstrong becomes the first person to walk on the moon.
  5. In 1976, the U.S. Viking robot spacecraft landed on Mars.
