  1. In 1638, Jonas Bronck of Holland becomes the first European settler in the Bronx.
  2. In 1831, the first steam engine train runs in the United States from Albany, NY to Schenectady, NY.
  3. In 1854, Henry David Thoreau published "Walden", a book reflecting on the two years he spent living on the shore of Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts.
  4. In 1902, Edward VII was crowned the King of England, following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, who had reigned since 1837, the longest British reign to date.
  5. In 1930, the animated cartoon "Dizzy Dishes" premieres, with a new star, Betty Boop.
  6. In 1936, Jesse Owens wins his fourth of four gold metals in the 400-meter relay at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany.
  7. In 1944, Smokey the Bear debuts as the spokesman/bear for fire prevention for the National Forest Service.
  8. In 1945, the United States drops a second Atomic Bomb on Japan in Nagasaki.
  9. In 1974, Richard M. Nixon officially ended his term as the 37th president with his resignation and Vice President Gerald R. Ford is sworn in as the 38th President of the United States.
  10. In 2000, Bridgestone/Firestone announces a massive tire recall due to accidents and deaths caused by problems with the tread on the tires.
