Problem:

$Admission to the Farmer's Fair costs $\mathdollar1.00$ per car and $\mathdollar0.50$ per animal in the car. If a total of $\mathdollar10.00$ were paid in the first hour of admission and three cars entered during that time, how many animals entered during that time?$

Solution:

$Since the number of cars during the first hour is known (three), subtract the fee for the cars from the total paid:\\\\$\$10.00 - 3 \times \$1.00 = \$7.00$\\\\The remaining \$7.00 covers the admission cost of the animals. Since each animal costs \$0.50, we can divide by that amount to determine the number of animals that entered during the first hour:\\\\$\$7.00 \div \$0.50$\\\\$0.50\overline{\big)7.00}$\\\\$5\overline{\big)70}$\\\\$14$$
