Description:

Born in the late eighteenth century, Chief Seattle was a famous figure in the history of the American West. He was the leader of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, which had lived near the Puget Sound for thousands of years. When white settlers discovered the abundance of this land, Chief Seattle encouraged his people to live peacefully alongside the newcomers. He helped the white men to establish a settlement, which they named Seattle in his honor. In spite of his friendship with the white settlers, he worried about the way they abused the natural resources of the land. He spoke about the importance of living in harmony with the natural world and treating it with respect, a message that continues to matter to anyone who cares about the environment today.
