Grade 5-6: Vocabulary Lesson for Monday, Week 14

This week's theme is: Economy

Word List 14

1. sluggish: Little activity, moving very slowly.
2. sparse: Spread out or not dense.
3. exasperation: Anger, irritation, state of annoyance.
4. sever: To cut off or break apart.
5. anxious: Worried, uneasy.
6. escalate: To increase, to make bigger.
7. morale: Mental confidence.

Monday Activities

1. Write the words and definitions in your vocabulary notebook.
2. Create your own sentence using each word and write this in your vocabulary notebook. We have provided samples below to get you started.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

If we don't improve,we are going to have a very sluggish recovery.
My body feels sluggish in this heat.

Traffic in the tunnel was sparse.
This leaves a sparse field of contenders for the May elections.

He shook his head in exasperation.
When the spokesman talked about he local government, a look of exasperation came on his face.

Some officials say it is in our best interests just to sever the ties to that country.
The President has determined that the best polity is to sever all contact.

She looked out of the window and became anxious to get home.
He was anxious about his chances to get this job.

You never know what this could escalate into.
Tension in the region continues to escalate.

Getting the job was a great morale booster for him.
