Grade 5-6: Vocabulary Lesson for Tuesday, Week 10

This week's theme is: Personality


Word List 10

  1. aggressive: starting fights, unfriendly, hostile
  2. nonchalant: not showing interest, lack of concern
  3. reliable: dependable, trustworthy
  4. courteous: polite, well-mannered
  5. monotonous: boring, not changing
  6. prejudice: an opinion based on feelings instead of facts, judging unfairly
  7. jovial: good humor, happy, playful

Tuesday Activities

  1. Use this site to create your own flashcards and quizzes. You will create a free account to keep your cards.
  2. Go to the Spelling City website. Type in your list of vocabulary words. Click on the button that says Play A Game. Select Which Word. Play the game and write down the fill-in-the-blank sentences in your notebook.
  3. Click on the site link. Click on "wordlist" at the top of the page. Then click on "create new wordlist." Enter your word list for the week. When finished, click on "games" at the top of the page. Then click on "flashcards" and select your list. See if you can name the definition on each word before clicking on it to see the answer.

If you need more information on your words, click on the link to use a on-line dictionary.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

He was not hired because of his aggressive behavior.
When angry, John becomes very aggressive.

Mark was nonchalant about being fired from his job.
Louis had a nonchalant attitude about school work.

I knew he was reliable, so I hired him to take care of my dog when I went out of town.
The bus boy was not very reliable and would not show up to work on time.

Jane was courteous to her fellow students and quietly put her things away without disturbing the others.
The banker was courteous to me while answering my questions.

The fair's activities were monotonous and I did not have fun.
Doing the same thing everyday can become monotonous.

Sam overcame his prejudice against new students.
We must not let the prejudice other people exhibit sway us into the same thinking.

Kate was jovial, even when the teacher piled on the homework.
There was a jovial atmosphere at the fair and everyone was having a great time!
