Grade 1-2: Vocabulary Lesson for Friday, Week 7

This week's theme is: Maps


Word List 7

  1. symbol: a sign or a picture that represents something
  2. map key: also called a legend, it shows where areas are located on a map
  3. landmark: a fixed object or statue used to identify a particular place
  4. river: a stream of water that usually empties into a lake or ocean

Friday Activities

  1. Write the vocabulary words on paper.
  2. Cut out each word into individual word pieces
  3. Lay your flash cards on the table with the definition side up. Match the paper words with the correct definition.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

The symbols on a map help us find things.
The symbol on a map for a hotel is a picture of a bed.

I can use the map key to see what the symbols represent.
The map key on this map shows a star to represent the capital of the state.

The Statue of Liberty is a landmark in New York.
The pyramids are landmarks in Egypt.

The ;Mississippi River runs through many states.
My grandfather took us fishing on the river.
