  • The Emancipation Proclamation had little effect early on.

Key Events:

  • September 17, 1962 - bloodiest single day of the war, more than 4,000 died.
  • January 1, 1863 - the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by Lincoln, freeing the slaves.

Key People:

  • David Farragut - naval commander who won control of New Orleans by way of the Mississippi.
  • Ulysses S Grant - commander of Union forces
  • Frederick Douglass - former slave and important abolitionist leader.

Key Places:

  • Bull Run, Virginia - the first major battle of the war, South wins.
  • Richmond, Virginia was the Confederate Capital
  • Antietam Creek, Maryland - important battle ground in civil war.
