Key Events:

  • 1822 - President James Monroe acknowledged new South American countries as independent from their colonizers
  • December, 1823 - Monroe Doctrine - President Monroe's statement that the US would not tolerate any further expansion of Europe to the Americas.

Key People:

  • Simon Bolivar, Francisco Miranda, Jose de San Martin and Miguel Hidalgo - South American leaders who led in their countries' freedom efforts, which succeeded, from Spain.

Key Places:

  • Holy Alliance - Russia, Prussia, and Austria had an agreement to help one another in the event of a popular movement to overthrow their monarchies.
