- 1822 - President James Monroe acknowledged new South American countries as independent from their colonizers
- December, 1823 - Monroe Doctrine - President Monroe's statement that the US would not tolerate any further expansion of Europe to the Americas.

- Simon Bolivar, Francisco Miranda, Jose de San Martin and Miguel Hidalgo - South American leaders who led in their countries' freedom efforts, which succeeded, from Spain.
