Key Facts:

  • Early interaction between Indians and Europeans was a combination of cooperation and conflict.
  • The Indians were pushed out of their land little by little, not a single battle or war.

Key Events:

  • In 16222, the first major conflict between the natives and Europeans occurred, and 347 "whites" died.
  • In 1637, the Pequot War occurred over the Connecticut River region.

Key People:

  • Phillip - an Indian chief who attempted to unite the tribes against Europeans taking over the land.
  • League of the Iroquois - democratic collection of Native American tribes who solved problems collectively.
