Key Events:
- 1887 Dawes Act - an ultimately unsuccessful law that sought to solve the problem of Native American lands being unfairly denied them (This law was superseded in 1934 by the Indian Reorganization Act)
Key People:
- Sioux and Apache Native Americans - those tribes from the Great Plains that were the most formidable opponents in resisting America's expansion.
- Geronimo - a prominent Apache Chief
- Helen Hunt Jackson - author of "A Century of Dishonor" which told of Native American hardships that resulted from American expansion
