  • Texas was an independent republic until becoming the 28th state in 1845.

Key Events:

  • In the Treaty of Guadalupe, Mexico gave up the Southwest region and California for $15 million.

Key People:

  • General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna - Mexican General who defeated the Americans in the Alamo in 1836.
  • Sam Houston - Texan military leader who eventually defeated the Mexicans and captured Santa Anna.
