- Britain unwisely opened conflict with the Dutch at the same time the Spanish forged an alliance with France, greatly hindering their war efforts.
Key Events:
- Benjamin Franklin went to France in 1776 as an ambassador and won popular support from the French, playing a critical role in enlisting their help.
- February 6, 1778 - French and Americans sign a number of treaties showing their alliance.
