  1. In 1844, the Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London.
  2. In 1862, after an fierce naval engagement on the Mississippi River, the city of Memphis surrenders to the Union navy.
  3. In 1882 - Henry W. Seely patented the first electric flatiron (the electric iron).
  4. In 1930, for the first time, frozen foods are sold commercially .
  5. In 1933, the first drive-in movie theater opened In Camden, NJ.
  6. In 1944, D-Day occurred, the day thousands of Allied troops invaded Normandy, France.
  7. In 1946, the formation of the Basketball Association of America takes place in New York City.
  8. In 1966, James Meridith, promoting voter registration among blacks, was shot and wounded in Mississippi.
  9. In 1971, the "Ed Sullivan Show" , a showcase for more than 20 years, and one of the the longest running variety shows on TV, last broadcasts on CBS-TV.
  10. In 1985, for 13th straight year (French), Chris Evert wins a grand slam tennis title.
