3. In 1847, Mormon leader Brigham Young and his followers arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake in present-day Utah.
4. In 1866, Tennessee became the first state to be readmitted to the Union after the Civil War.
5. In 1911, American archeologist Hiram Bingham gets his first look at Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement in Peru that is now one of the world's top tourist destinations.
6. In 1925, after a high profile trial, Scopes was found guilty of teaching evolution in a Tennessee high school and fined $100 plus court costs.
