Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection

When I tried to open MS Word I received the message "Application busy or missing". I know it is there. What do I do?

  • Open application first, then open file
  • Install proper application or application version on hard dirve
  • If two copies of application, trash one
  • Rebuild the desktop
  • Zap the PRAM

When my computer starts, I get the message that there is not enough memory.

  • Hold shift key down and restart (turns off extensions)
  • Reduce size of disk cache
  • Reduce size of RAM disk
  • Remove some software extensions, restart computer after each deletion
  • Add a memory expansion card

I can't get the TV to have the same picture as the computer.

  • color on computer b/w on TV means the cable is not plugged in all the way
  • the ant/video button was not set to the computer feed
  • S-video cable may be bad.

The TV is black and white while on computer feed, and the cable connection is plugged in all the way (replugged twice).

My diskette won't eject.

  • Shift-Command-1

Computer will not let me throw a file away.

  • Check that the file is not locked
  • Close the file, quit the application
  • If on a floppy disk, unlock the disk (move the slide so the hole is covered)
  • Turn off file sharing temporarily
  • Choose Sharing from the File menu and uncheck the box that indicates cannot move, rename, or delete file

  • Restart the Mac
  • Unhook all SCSI devisces and restart the kMac
  • Restart with the shift key down
  • Use Extensions Manager to turn off extensions
  • Zap the PRAM- The turn virtual mem;ory and the disk cache on one at a time (restarting the computer each time.) Try making the disk cache smaller or lower virtual memory in the memory control panel.
  • Start with disk tools and if the hard drive icon shows up, see if there are two system suitcases and/or two finders. If the hard drive icon does not show up call the Help Desk
  • Run Disk First Aid, MacCHeck or Norton's Disk Doctor
  • Do a clean reinstall of the system

  • Close all applications, restart the computer and try again
  • Allocate More/less memory to the application (use Get Info)
  • Application may be incompatible with System software, upgrade
  • Turn off virtual memory or 32 bit addressing

The computer just keeps locking up for no apparent reason.

  • Type Command-Q
  • Type Command- Option- Control-Escape then choose yes to Force Quit. Save all documents and quit all open applications, then restart the Mac
  • Type Control-Command and the startup key or Control-= Option-Command and the startup key to reset the computer.

Teacher complains of no Internet access. Other messages start coming in about Internet not working. You check the Internet connection in the library that feeds the ISDN line and it's perfectly OK. You go to rooms in another hallway and their machines work.

  • That suggests a hub…lights weren't even on, it wasn't in a socket but in a powerstrip site where someone had been working.. unplugged it and plugged it back in

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tip for Odd Behavior of any kind when the system is not frozen:

  • Quit whatever you are doing and Restart the computer. Often this will clear the glitch.
