An Internet Management Tool for Classroom Teachers
![]()
Version Note! I just tried this in Netscape 7 and got no results. I guess Netscape has turned into an IE wannabe
IE Note: This same functionality is built into IE. It is called History and is found on the Standard Buttons toolbar of a PC. If yours does not have History go to the View menu, select Toolbars then Customize. On a Mac, History is in the Window menu. You can also customize Mac IE to add a History button to the toolbar.
Rationale: Even with a filter in place, teacher supervision of student Internet use is necessary. Netscape can be asked to provide a database of the sites visited by a computer. The management technique described below works best if students sign a log sheet whenever using the Internet.
Step 1 - Highlight the URL in the location block and type about:global. Hit the return/enter key to see a database of the sites visited by the computer. An example of the database entry follows:
URL: http://www.state.tn.us/consumer/lifesmarts/img/how2.jpg
Date: Thu Sept 10 09:49:06 1998To see an example of the entire search of un expired links from one week click here.
Step 2 - Bookmark the results of your search. Bookmarks will always show up as the last entry on the list.
Step 3 - From the Window menu along the top of your screen, select Bookmarks. This list can be edited. Click and drag the bookmark to the top of your list of bookmarks.
Step 4 - While you are still in Window/Bookmarks, and while the bookmark named "Information about the Netscape global history" is highlighted, go to the Item menu and select Edit Bookmarks. You may wish to change the name of the bookmark to make it more meaningful to your class.
This technique displays all un expired links. You can modify the search to see what is in your cache by using the location about:cache. Another cache search shows only what images are in the cache; about:memory-cache.
